The Cherokee Purple beefsteak tomato is an very old heirloom tomato that dates back to pre-1890 and is recognized as an old Cherokee Indian heirloom that originated in Tennessee. The Cherokee Purple offers some of the best flavor with an earthy-sweet-smokey, rich taste that is delicious eaten raw. This tomato has a beautiful purple skin with a slight pinkish-red hue.

Did you know: Tomatoes originated from the Andes, in what is now called Peru, Bolivia, Chile and Ecuador where they grew wild. They were first cultivated by the Aztecs and Incas as early as 700 AD.

CLASSIFICATION:  Open Pollinated, Heirloom, Non-Gmo, Annual, Indeterminate

Open pollinated means this plants flowers are fertilized by bees, moths, birds, bats, and even the wind or rain. The seed that forms produces the same plant the following year. 

All heirlooms are open pollinated, but not all open pollinated plants are heirlooms. Only a small fraction of the plant world is considered heirloom. This variety has a history of being passed down within communities and families as early as the 1700's, similar to the generational sharing of items like jewelry or furniture.

Determinate means the plant reaches it's maximum height and that the fruit tend to ripen at once, usually over a short 2 to 3 week period. 

Indeterminate means the plant continues to grow and produce all growing season until a hard frost hits and stops them in their tracks.
